The recent disruption at USAID and the ripple effects across the humanitarian and development consulting ecosystem are more than just financial tremors. For decades, the humanitarian and development consulting model was built on a pyramid: → Partners at the top selling strategies → Managers coordinating layers of complexity → Associates grinding through analysis and slides.
This structure shaped everything from how knowledge flowed, over how clients were served, to how outcomes were (or weren’t) delivered. And it served a system that too often prioritised optics over impact, process over progress.
But this pyramid is not being flattened. It is being actually flipped.
Today, AI and data-driven technologies are replacing armies of junior analysts. Small, senior-led expert teams are delivering faster and more relevant results. And most importantly, outcomes, not hours, are becoming the true currency of value.
This is not just a technology story. It is a real mindset shift.
The old model relied on the illusion of complexity. But communities don’t need complexity. They need access. They need affordability. They need models that empower and not patronise.
